Dusty: ok
Dad: and you guys actually have his phone cause they used it for
Dittman: yeah yep, no we
Dusty: you took the video?
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: why don’t you just walk me through what happened today, start at the beginning of your day and
Jawahn: yeah so we just met up at the Stillwater high school at 1130 and drove to the river, get there by 12 and yeah just on the river
Dusty: so I’m going to stop you right there. So you met at the Stillwater highschool at 1130 with some buddies
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: and who was in your group
Jawahn: uh it was me, Owen, Ryan, you talked to both those guys, Landon, Alex Vang, and then Isaac
Dusty: so what 7 of you
Jawahn: 6
Dusty: 6 ok and you carpooled over to somerset
Jawahn: yeah we dropped our cars off at the high school
Dusty: ok and where did you guys the plan was to go tubing
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: and where did you guys, where did you go in somerset
Jawahn: we just went to the Apple river, like put in Apple river tubing on the GPS and that brings you there
Dusty: it’s my understanding that there’s 3 or 4 places that you can launch from did you go from a specific business to buy tubes?
Jawahn: uh not that I can really think of to be honest I mean its just exactly where we googled at wherever that google location was
Dusty: did you have your own tubes
Jawahn: we rented tubes
Dusty: you rented tubes
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: and you don’t know where you rented tubes from
Jawahn: no not really [inaudible]
Dusty: but the 6 of you were in a group
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: and you launched from a certain place in somerset, wi
Jawahn: yeah [inaudible]
Dusty: alright uh and then just your group of 6
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: alright. You guys pack any kind of alcohol or anything. [Jawahn nods] Ok what kind of alcohol ?
Jawahn: uh just like beers
Dusty: beers
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: did you consume any alcohol today
Jawahn: I did yeah
Dusty: ok how much
Jawahn: probably like 3 beers
Dusty: 3 beers
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: ok what time do you think you started at
Jawahn: uh whatever time we got on the river. We tried to get there by noon so at noon 1215
Dusty: so you think you were in the water by noon
Jawahn: uh yeah
Dusty: ok so you guys start tubing down the river group of you-kind of walk me through what’s going on
Jawahn: uh we’re just floating down honestly just having a good time, kind of interacting with everyone around us to be honest everybody was really cool, everybody was being nice and Ryan I and were even saying to each other everybody here today is not really on any BS everybody is here to have a good time after all that we got to the part that my coach actually owns the cappers I don’t know if you guys know
Dittman: oh yeah, yeah yeah
Jawahn: [inaudible] and yeah once we got down to that part there was like a stoppage. A lot of people were stopping in different areas throwing footballs or frisbees or whatever just having a good time
Dusty: yep
Jawahn: and during that there was this other guy after we floated past while he was stopping another guy just standing there looking really honestly suspicious and everybody in my group was just like oh what are you doing why are you right here looking at us? What are you doing. Another group like three other groups were actually all looking at the whole situation going down, and nobody really thought of anything that deeply off of the guy I mean nobody expected this of course and then we were just talking to the guy like what are you doing and then another group walks up and everybody honestly antagonizing the guy and then somebody punches him and after he got punched he got back up I guess and stabbed 5 I don’t know how the heck he could have stabbed 5 people honestly.
Dusty: so specifically to you, and you floating down the river, you guys come through the I know it to be the hideaway campground that’s what Mike Cappers owns
Jawahn: yeah, yeah
Dusty: I know there’s kind of some sandbars in the river and stuff like that, would that be fair?
Jawahn: yeah that’s where [inaudible]
Dusty: so that’s where everyone was kind of piled up and having a good time throwing stuff and you told me that you guys floated beyond that
Jawahn: after that we floated just a little bit down the river
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: still Capper’s ground
Dusty: yep so it kind of comes a little bit around the bend right there with the campgrounds up on the left and this guy was standing
Jawahn: he was standing pretty close to the left shore kind of
Dusty: you think he was like was he on Capper’s property
Jawahn: yeah he was
Dusty: and him standing there he was like, what was he doing
Jawahn: he was I believe to what he was said he was looking for a snorkel. Cause we saw the guy with like his goggles and he was looking for his little snorkel thing
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: and that’s what he said he was looking for and we’re oh ok that’s cool and then he just started acting weirder after that
Dusty: so did you guys say anything to him?
Jawahn: yeah we were just pretty much asking him what he was up to
Dusty: any name calling
Jawahn: yeah there was
Dusty: what was that
Jawahn: I mean our guys were just probably calling him a weirdo
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: like you’re being weird what are you doing? Why are you talking to us? Stuff like that
Dusty: and then did you have any contact with him
Jawahn: yeah not any physical contact I mean I was speaking with the guy pretty much face to face yeah
Dusty: like how far away
Jawahn: uh probably like this distance
Dusty: ok and what were you saying to him
Jawahn: I was like I literally have my camera out the whole thing is recorded on my phone
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: Somerset police have my phone and I was like yo what is this guy doing? I actually don’t remember everything I said but it’s all on camera
Dusty: that’s fair I don’t expect you to. And you guys were stopped all your buddies?
Jawahn: yeah cause eventually cause the guy ran up to our tube he grabs our tube like oh yeah. It was actually pretty-all that’s on camera as well, he came all the way up, jogging through the water, grabbing our tube, saying whatever he said to us and then that’s when we really started to ask like what is this guy really up to like then we all got out of our tube cause we were floating down the river initially and we all got out of out tubes to really like see the situation. Nobody expected it to go the way it went of course
Dusty: so then when he runs up to your tube and he is acting weird and you guys engage him and you’re recording
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: what unfolds
Jawahn: so this other group of grown men all walk up-even a grown woman as well they walk up to kind of help us out to make sure we’re good cause they saw we were a little younger cause the guy is like in his 50’s and then like the guy he’s acting pretty weird toward them more crazy more threatening towards them than he was towards us and then two guys, one guy punched him and then another guy punched him again and he fell to the ground and that’s what I was seeing-that’s all on camera as well that whole part of it. And then I see him get up, I can just see a scary look in his eyes, I just really didn’t trust the look in his eyes it was pretty scary like seriously scary. Just ran around pretty much and was just recording the whole thing just had this uh-
Dusty: who was running around
Jawahn: me and pretty much [inaudible]
Dusty: what was the guy doing that got punched, what did he do
Jawahn: uh he pretty much just fell down and he was in the water kinda and then he got back up and pretty much went like demon mode like he’s ready to get after it
Dusty: did you see anything in his hands
Jawahn: I actually did not see the knife but that knife was probably on the camera
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: cause after a while I saw one guy that he had stabbed and then I like my video was not even what I was seeing at that point cause I was really looking at what’s going on around the guy cause-
Dusty: so what did you see? Did you see this guy-can you describe this guy to me?
Jawahn: uh he’s a guy he’s like a little chubbier he’s probably in his 50’s probably about this tall
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: and he has like a little beard, a little stubby beard kinda and then he kinda-what’s his name- there’s kinda a celebrity that actually looked pretty similar to him but I can’t think of his name’s like Alex something I don’t know-he looked- yeah, no I just don’t know how else to describe him
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: but it is all on video so
Dittman: do you recall what he was wearing for attire like
Jawahn: it was just some-he had some swim trunks on that were like grey. Grey-ish black
Dittman: grey-ish black
Jawahn: yeah
Dittman: ok
Jawahn: and Cappers did take a picture of my phone cause I paused it on where the guy was actually where his face was visible, he took a picture of it and sent it around so-there should be an accurate picture of him
Dittman: yeah no we’re just going off of your up here, your recollection
Woman: hello
Dusty: are you
Dad: she’s with us
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: what’s your name
Jewel: Jewel
Dusty: Jewel
Jewel: mhmm
Dusty: Jewel I’m Dusty, I’m with the St. Croix county sheriff’s office, this is my partner Andy Dittman. How do you fit in here
Jawahn: step mom
Dusty: step-mom perfect, ok. Alright so, just to catch you up, we’re just talking to him, asking him to explain his day to us and um going from there so guy’s wearing grey/black swim trunks, middle-aged man little chubbier, stubble beard
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: there was an altercation that happened between another group slightly behind you of older people they started punching him
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: ok and he falls down, you’re recording, you’re kinda moving around?
Jawahn: yeah he also like what really got the group like after him is he punched some woman to the ground and that group really started getting on his case then
Dusty: so did he assault-did he punch the female prior to them punching him
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: he assaulted the female first?
Jawahn: yeah. He punched some guy in the face and then everybody was all around him like he was just kinda trying to get anybody it looked like
Dusty: so he just started punching people
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: and then they retaliated and started punching him?
Jawahn: yeah mhmm
Dusty: then he fell to the ground and he got up you said you saw him he had a weird look in his eyes
Jawahn: yeah scary look
Dusty: but you never saw any weapon in his hand or anything
Jawahn: yeah I was just trying to get out of the situation
Dusty: and then from there were you still in proximity to like my partner here?
Jawahn: yeah, yeah cause like eventually, like after all that was going on I still had my phone out recording and just took a different angle around to wear my friends were at
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: and panicking around the situation at the time
Dusty: where were your friends at the time
Jawahn: my friends-well some of them were right next to him-my friend who got stabbed-some of them were dragging him to shore, even that’s on video
Dusty: you saw-did you see him get stabbed
Jawahn: no I didn’t even see him get stabbed
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: yeah I just saw 3 people go down, one guy with guts out of his stomach literally
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: and then another guy-my friend who got dragged to shore and then another guy who got stabbed but he was like fine just kinda talking to everybody holding it right here just sitting there waiting for the ambulance
Dusty: and you didn’t know this person prior to today
Jawahn: no
Dusty: do you know anyone else on that river besides who you were with?
Jawahn: no
Dusty: ok um
Dad: Cappers
Jawahn: well yeah Cappers I guess
Dusty: coach. And was he there?
Jawahn: uh he wasn’t really until everything broke loose and then he showed up and I saw him
Dusty: we you guys camping anywhere tonight
Jawahn: no
Dusty: ok um your plan was to go home or
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: ok and you guys didn’t put your tubes in at Cappers place correct?
Jawahn: no
Dusty: ok after the chaos happens and what you described as the stabbing happened, what happened
Jawahn: uh kind of just a lot of people trying to help out all the strangers there that witnessed it. There were probably some strangers who actually saw the stabbing more than I did.
Dusty: ok
Jawahn: uh yeah those guys were just trying to help us out and calling the cops and some person knew CPR do as much as we could everyone around us
Dittman: did you see where he and when I say he I mean the guy doing the stabbing, did you see where he went
Jawahn: uh no I didn’t see where he went
Dittman: ok
Jawahn: after I saw the people were like uh [inaudible] he just probably snuck off after that cause everybody was pretty worried about everybody else
Dusty: you didn’t see anything
Jawahn: no I didn’t
Dusty: um and then help came and then
Jawahn: yeah
Dusty: any other questions
Dittman: I don’t think so
Dusty: um we got your phone with the video we’ll work on that you got a card or anything, did you get a card from anyone?
Dad: no
Dusty: I’ll give you my card here with my phone number on it, you can call with any questions you might have. Our forensic lab will probably be working on getting that video downloaded, get that phone back to him at some point
Dad: you guys can obviously call me because he can’t answer
Dittman: you want the case number on the back there
Dusty: ah yeah
Dittman: it’s 22-8400
Dusty: so my number’s on the back, that will get directly to me, that’s who I am, who I work for, my email if you have any questions comments or concerns please reach out to me
Dittman: no we honestly, its honestly a very shitty deal to say it bluntly we appreciate you talking to us. Um the drinking is -we’re just trying to gauge what was going on today you’re not going to be getting any citations or any trouble for that we’re just-Dusty and I have worked in this county long enough to understand what happens on the Apple River we know that there’s some drinking that’s going on and partying going on out there, so we just have to ask those questions don’t worry about that. I’ll just tell you that straight up alright so other than that, that’s all I got unless Dusty has got something else
Dusty: I don’t reach out if you have any questions or if you have any things that are going on uh, you know like he said this is a traumatic experience talk to you mom, talk to your dad, you know make sure you just take care of yourself alright
Dittman: yeah and take care of your friends too
Dusty: absolutely
Dittman: you guys need something
Dad: these guys been running around we were saying well Peloquin the first guy that you guys interviewed I’ve known that dude 10 years since these guys were in second grade football
Dittman: right
Dad: this is their group, Landon, Alex, this is their group and the parents you know, you can call one of those 4 and you’re going to find them you know what I mean type thing so this is insane
Dittman: absolutely
Dusty: appreciate it
Dad: not a problem
Dittman: yeah thanks
Dad: thanks
Dittman: do you want to see if Alex wants to roll over and we can talk to him.
